Miramachi scenery

The Miramichi River rises near to the village of Juniper and flows gently through green forests and hills, past picture post card villages and white steepled country churches until it reaches the mouth of the river at Miramichi.

This peaceful setting is any angler’s bliss! Fresh, mint bright Salmon begin their journey up the Miramichi in very early June. These large, legendary, early run fish are rare but, as locals will tell you, are the very best! By late June a number of classic 8 to 12 lb summer Salmon appear in the clear, gravel bottomed pools, they are joined by a larger number of spirited grilse, around 3 to 6 lb fish, that have visited the Atlantic for only one winter.
This seasonal, silvery, migration continues through the month of August, new fish arriving as if by magic with each new refreshing rainfall, the fish pause for hours, days, or even weeks in defined areas, sometimes they are seen to leap from the river, promising wonderful sport and startling the wading angler.

The last surge of Salmon happens later in September. This fall run goes through to mid October when the season ends. Tinted bronze Salmon stir in almost every pool, awaiting the November spawning, which in itself heralds a new generation.

Temperatures are changing, the sun is lower in the sky, the larger fish are now in the river so it must be autumn; it's time to don those waders again and test our skills with cast and fly. The Miramichi offers a bonus: it begins when winter's ice finally leaves the river, usually mid April. During this spring season fishing, boats are used, using colourful streamers to catch the Salmon on their return to the ocean after spawning. This spring fishing won’t match the freshly arrived summer Salmon, but nonetheless they jump frequently and can run the line to the end of your backing, giving great sport, where even inexperienced fishermen catch their limits.
