Few
experiences in angling compare with the thrill of the sudden rise, the
breathtaking pull as your fly sweeps around, followed by the shrill
sound of your reel emptying as a silvery demon dances at the end of your
line.
Bring the sturdy tackle. A graphite rod 8.5 to 10.5
feet long, matched with a number six to nine weight- forward or double
taper line, will suffice.
Atlantic Salmon hold in the water column, looking
up. They rise in the broad shallow Miramichi, floating flies often
out-fish sinkers. Deeply fished wets are appropriate only in extreme
conditions - spring, in high water spate or very late in the fall
season, when the waters are extremely cold.
A large arbour reel of sturdy construction with a
strong drag. Attach your line to at least 150 yds of braided nylon
backing. Keep your leader simple and fresh - 10 ft, tapering to an 8 lb
test tippet is fine. Don't forget the Polaroid sunglasses, a hat, some
raingear, extra leaders, insect repellent, a digital camera, wading
staff, chest waders with comfortable felt bottomed wading shoes should
complete your basic outfit.
