Body Stretch BloodwormFly Tying History

We all know how successful fishing bloodworm patterns can be on all Stillwater’s whether large or small. For years I have endeavored to try and obtain the translucent look of the natural whilst keeping the pattern both simple to tie yet durable. After experimenting with products such as epoxy etc for many years the Juri Klima body stretch material combined with a couple of coats of liquid glass gives the translucency that I require and that simplicity. This is an extremely effective pattern, fished slowly within the feeding zone has generated many bag limits either for pleasure or on the competition scene.

Fly Tying Method

Hook  Size #14-#8 Buzzer, Grub or Sedge
Thread In this case Red but change for body material
Body  Red Juri Klima Body Stretch (change colour for midge)
Coating  3 coats of varnish or 2 coats of Liquid Glass

Tying Procedure

  1. Insert the hook into the vice. Bed the hook with thread but only the first section. Pinch and loop the thread and tie in the body stretch material. Once tied in give the thread a couple of extra turns to really lock in the body stretch. Until you get used to the tying you may want to half hitch at this point

2. Trim off the excess. Pull the body stretch tight and follow down the hook with thread with  open turns. It is important that you open the turns as much as possible as the hook shank will the show through the body material giving the translucent effect.

3.     When you have reached the bend return to the eye in open turns.

4.     The Body Stretch material has a slight line down the centre. Using this as a guide, stretch the Body Stretch and return to the eye of the hook in overlapping turns. Once returned to the eye of the hook, tie off and trim excess. Whip Finish and coat with 3 coats of liquid glass letting each coat dry thoroughly.

5.     As an alternative why not try changing the body colour to create a whole range of midge pupa. Below is an example of an olive buzzer tied with this wonderful material.

Tight lines and good luck!
